Umbrella liability insurance, or excess liability insurance, is a type of commercial insurance that covers a small business or contractor for liability claims that exceed the underlying limits of liability coverage.

Umbrella policies are a type of commercial insurance that adds an extra layer of public liability insurance protection for the small business owner.  An example of an insurance claim covered under an umbrella liability insurance policy is an employee involved in an at-fault fatal automobile accident with a company vehicle in which multiple people were also injured.  If the total injuries, property damage, and lawsuits were to exceed the limit of liability under the commercial vehicle insurance policy, the umbrella insurance policy would offer the excess limit of insurance protection.

An Extra Layer of Protection for Your Assets

If a business has any amount of assets to safeguard, it should consider adding an extra layer of liability insurance protection by purchasing an umbrella liability insurance policy.

Insurance coverage is usually offered in increments of $1,000,000. As the limit is increased, premiums per increment are usually reduced. For example, a small contractor’s first $1,000,000 umbrella liability insurance policy might be $500 annually. A $1,000,000 umbrella insurance policy might be $750 annually, with a $3,000,000 limit at a $1,000 annual premium.
